Transferring a Domain Name
Questions
  1. When can I transfer a domain name?
  2. What is a Registrar-Lock?
  3. How long will a transfer take?
  4. Transferring a .com/.net/.org domain name

Answers
  1. When can I transfer a domain name?
It is perhaps easier to explain the circumstances when a domain name will be difficult or impossible to transfer:
    • For the first 60 days after it has been first registered
    • When it has expired (the renewal date has passed)
    • When there is a Registrar-Lock on the domain name, preventing transfer (see below).
    • When the email address for the administrative contact of the domain name is not under your direct control

    What is a Registrar-Lock?

A registrar lock is essentially a bar placed on a domain name preventing it's transfer. This needs to be lifted in order for a transfer to go through.

The reason for these locks is to prevent others trying to transfer your domain name without consent.

Transfer locks can normally be remved via the control panel your current registrar provides, or if they do not provide a control panel to manage your domains, you will need to contact them directly to have the lock removed.

How long will a transfer take?

The transfer process once initiated should take no more than 7 days to complete.

However, if you need to have a registrar lock removed or your administrative contact details updated, you should allow another week or two for he transfer.

For example, if you are planning to trasfer your domain name before it is next due for renewal, you should begin the transfer process at least 3 weeks prior to the domain's renewal date.

    Transferring a .com/.net/.org domain name
In order to transfer a .com/.net/.org domain name, you must ensure that:

    A) Registrar Lock is Off
The registrar lock or transfer lock prevents a domain name from being transferred from your current provider. You should ensure that the transfer lock is switched off.

    B) Valid email address
In order for a transfer to proceed, you must ensure that the administrative contact email address for your domain name is valid and that you have control over it. Emails will be sent to this address requesting authentication of the domain name transfer request. If you cannot access the email address associated with the domain(s) you wish to transfer you will need to contact the current registrar.

NB: You can view the current admin email address by performing a search for your domain name here and viewing the "Whois Output".

Transfer from Eircom, Esat BT or UTV
If you are moving from a provider such as Eircom, BT Ireland or UTV, please ensure there are no outstanding billing issues that can cause delays to acceptance of transfer requests. The larger Irish ISPs and hosting companies will respect requests for domain transfers to other companies provided no billing issues exist.
