.IE Registration For Personal Use
As you may be aware, .ie domain names are issued by the IE Domain Registry (IEDR). The IEDR sets rules for domain name registration.
If you require a domain name for personal use, such as a personal home page or for a web project, there are a number of avenues available to you.
Please note that if you wish to register a domain name, you may do so here. Please do not send any documents to us before you have placed an order.
--------------------------------- PERSONAL NAME DOMAIN ---------------------------------
The IEDR copy of the applicants passport, driving license or birth certificate is required. Applicants applying under this category can register only their initials with a number of their choice e.g. John Citizen can apply to register jc1.ie.
As the choice of domain name is quite limited for this category, not many people go for it. There are other options below.
--------------------------------- DISCRETIONARY DOMAIN NAME ---------------------------------
The IEDR require a detailed letter from the applicant outlining their claim on the proposed domain name.
This might be suitable if you wish to register a domain name for a particular project or other reason you think the IEDR might find reasonable. There is no limit on your choice of domain name, but there is no guarantee the IEDR will accept your request.
--------------------------------- REGISTERED BUSINESS NAME ---------------------------------
Another alternative is to register a business name with the Companies Registration Office. For a once-off fee of €30, you can register a business name and then register a domain name similar to this business name. All you are required to supply to the IEDR is the business name number.
-------------------------------------- UNINCORPORATED ASSOCIATION NAME --------------------------------------
If you are registering the name for a group, club or association, the IEDR will require a self-issued letter from the applicant on the association's letterhead stating that they are an Unincorporated Association and require the domain name to reflect their organisation's name.
NB: Letterhead just means a printed letter with the name of the association, address etc.
Please note that if you wish to register a domain name, please use our .IE Domain Registration form here. Please do not send any documents to us before you have placed an order.
