How do I qualify for a .ie domain name?
.ie domains operate in a different manner to .com domains. These domains are awarded on a first come first served basis.
.ie domains are awarded by the IE Domain Registry (IEDR) once you have proven you are entitled to the domain name you are applying for.
Applicants for a .ie domain must have a real and substantive connection to Ireland, by being a registered business here, holding an Irish or European trademark or having trading links with Irish customers or suppliers.
The exact documentation required depends on what type of a company/organisation you are.
Can I register a personal .IE Domain Name?
Yes, but there are restrictions as to the domain name you may register.
For example, if your name is Peter Murphy, you cannot register petermurphy.ie.
Members of the public can only register a domain name that is a combination of their initials and two digits.
Therefore, Peter Murphy could register pm23.ie.
A personal trading name however, can be registered in the case of a solicitor, doctor, journalist, singer etc, where that person trades under their own name. In this case for example, a solicitor named Peter Murphy could register petermurphy.ie.
