Answers
  1. I have been contacted by someone saying a third party is trying to register a variation of my domain name. What should I do?
This is a scam designed to pressure you into purchasing domain names at a price far higher than normal.

You should not make any purchase, and if you are in any doubt, you should contact ourselves for further information.

Can someone really register a variation of my domain name?
It is possible for them to do so. However, the chances of someone doing so are quite small unless you are a well known brand.

If they do so they may also be breaking trademark or other trading laws.
While it can be prudent to register several different endings, for example a .co.uk domain name if you trade a lot with the UK, we do not recommend that you should register every variation of your domain.
There are possibly dozens of variations you can make by tagging on a plural or a country name etc.

Where did they get my contact details?
Every domain name registered is assigned registrant and administrative contact details. Our company policy is that domain names should always be registered in the name of our client, giving you full ownership and control over your domain name.
However, this does mean that your contact details are included in the "whois" domain name database and can be looked up by others.

Cloch has recently launched the ID protect service which holds this with a third party proxy who do not make these details public. More info on this service here.

Where can I find more information on this?
The Irish Internet Association (IIA) has published a warning on this subject here, as has the IE Domain Registry (IEDR) here.

Cloch Internet is always happy to answer any questions you might have on this issue.
