Answers
  1. What is a domain name?
A domain name, such as cloch.ie, signifies your own address on the Internet. As no two parties may ever hold the same domain name at the same time, it is a truly unique identifier of you or your company. It is how people will remember your site and find you among the millions of other Web sites on the Internet.

What characters and length can a domain name contain?
A domain name can be up to 63 characters in length. The Domain Name may consist of all Alphanumeric Characters (A-Z and 0-9) and may contain one or more hyphen "-" characters which may be used only between any two alphanumeric characters. The minimum length of a domain name is three characters. .IE Domain Names Only: Domain names with 2 characters may be permitted provided that not both are letters eg: one must be a number (o2.ie etc). Two letter domains are still not permitted.

What is the difference between the various domain endings?
There are various domain name endings that can be registered, such as .COM, .NET, .IE etc. These can be split into two sections: gTLD: gTLD (Generic Top Level Domains) endings are .COM, .NET, .ORG, .INFO, .BIZ etc. They are generally issued on a first come first served basis, and anyone can register a domain name with this ending. ccTLD: ccTLD (Country Code Top Level Domains) endings are two character endings corresponding to countries for example, .IE relates to Ireland. Most ccTLD registries have rules regarding who can register a domain name of that type. There is no difference from a functional point of view between the different domain types.

What is the procedure for registering a new domain name?
Once the order and payment has been received, gTLD domain names (.com, .net, .org, .info, .biz) will be registered automatically and should be live within 24 hours. ccTLD domain names such as .IE etc may require further contact with you as applicants must comply with the registry rules. This can often mean sending supporting documentation etc. Please note that successful completion of the ordering process does not gurantee your domain name. You will be notified when your domain name has been successfully registered.

How do I transfer an existing domain name?
Only .ie, .com, .net, .biz, .info and .org domain names can be transferred to Cloch Internet Services. In order to transfer a domain name from one registrar to another, you will need to follow the transfer procedures of the gaining registrar (the registrar the you are transferring to). You will be required by the gaining registrar to verify the request to ensure it is legitimate and that you are the rightful owner. Once the transfer request has been verified, the gaining registrar will submit the transfer request to the Global Registry. Once a transfer request has been submitted to the Global Registry, the current registrar for the name will receive notification of the request. The Global Registry will allow the current registrar up to 5 business days in which to approve or decline the transfer request. You may or may not receive verification material from the current registrar. Each registrar has their own policies concerning transfers away to another registrar. It is a good idea to contact your current registrar in order to make yourself familiar with thier policies in order to avoid potential delays. Some registrars have names locked against transfers that must be removed before a request can be submitted and some may send a verification email to verify the transfer away.

I have registered a domain name, but have since changed my mind and wish to cancel. How do I go about canceling my purchase?
Unfortunately, once a domain name has been purchased, the transaction is final. This is due to the current Terms and Conditions that all reputable domain name registrars operate under. You are always free to register another domain name, but at additional cost.

Are there any "hidden costs" when registering a domain name?
Almost everything you need to start using your domain name is included in your registration fee. The only additional cost would be web hosting space, which can be provided at a price to suit your circumstances.

Why does my newly registered domain name show up as "available"?
Once your name is registered with Cloch Internet, it will take up to 48 hours before your information will be posted on the Whois search, depending on the load. This holds true for all registrars.

How do I renew my domain name registration?
When your domain name registration comes up for renewal, we will send an e-mail to the person listed as the billing contact for that domain name. That person will have 30 days to renew the domain name's registration and will receive reminders 20, 10, 5, 3, 1 and 0 days prior to expiry. Following the expiration date, the domain will be inactive and unusable but we will continue to hold the name as registered for a grace period of 10 days. If there is still no response after the grace period, the domain name will expire and become available for registration by other parties.

Do I own the domain name?
Yes, you are the owner of the domain name. You have full control of the domain name and may host it at any web hosting provider. If you move your domain name to another web host, you are still obligated to pay Cloch Internet Services the annual domain name registration fee. If you transfer the domain name to another registrar, you will no longer be obligated to pay the annual registration fee to Cloch Internet Services.

Can a domain transfer be rejected?
A domain is required to be with the current registrar for 60 days, and cannot have an expired status. These are the two common reasons a transfer would be rejected due to domain status. Each registrar may have it's own policy on waiting periods and should be consulted should a question arise.

    What does DNS mean?

How do I transfer a .info domain name?
Transferring .info domain names is quite straight forward.

All we need is the authorisation key (a string of numbers and letters) associated with the domain name. You should be able to see this key either from within your current providers control panel, or by requesting it from your provider.

If possible, you should include the autorisation key in the comments box when placing your order.

Transfers must be completed before the expiry date of your domain name.

How can I change my name servers?
    .IE Domain Names
At the moment, .ie domain nameserver changes must be carried out manually. Please enter a support ticket from within the client portal and this will be carried out straight away.

Please note that nameserver changes will only take effect Mon-Fri as the IE Domain Registry does not update domains at weekends.

    .COM/.NET/.ORG/.INFO/.BIZ/.CO.UK Domains
