Will my data be secure?
Absolutely. Before your data is sent to our backup servers, it is encrypted using banking strength encryption, with a passphrase that only you know (you set it when creating your first backup).
Your data is then sent to our backup servers. They are located in a secure, carrier class data centre in Dublin, Ireland.
Only you have access to your files and only you can decrypt your backup files with your encryption passphrase.

How long does a backup take?
This depends on 3 factors: your Internet connection speed, your PC and the amount of data to be backed up.
The initial backup will take the longest, assuming you select a large amount of files to back up (for example, the contents of your "My Documents" folder).
Our backup software uses incremental backups. This means that it only backs up files that have changed once the initial backup has been made.
The high level file encryption and file compression that takes place can be processor intensive, thus a fast computer will complete this task more quickly.
Many broadband technologies such as ADSL have different upload and download speeds, with download speeds usually being several times faster than the upload speeds. As you will be sending data from your computer to our backup server, it is mainly this upload speed that will determine how long a backup takes.
The first backup may take several hours to complete. It is recommended that this is run overnight or even over the weekend.
The normal incremental backups, backing up say, 20MB should take no longer than 20-40mins on a standard broadband connection. It is recommended that this is run in the evening time so as not to slow down your connection while it is in use.

What should I backup?
The backup software allows you to include and exclude particular files and/or directories in your backup set.
We recommend that you select only important data files and do not select program files etc as this will take up quite a large amount of storage space and you will already be in posession of program CD-ROM's etc.
You may or may not wish to back up certain file types such as music files, videos, pictures etc. They can be backed up, but bear in mind that they will increase your storage requirements.
You can of course backup your entire hard-drive if you wish.

How do I restore my data?
Simply select the restore tab from within the backup software. This will allow you to choose which files you wish to restore.

What if my internet connection disconnects while it's backing up? Or what if I shut off my computer in the middle of the backup?
The backup software will simply resume where it left off, starting with the last file that was successfully backed up.

How much storage space will I need?
The amount of storage space you will require depends on what you are backing up of course.
Bear in mind that the backup software compresses the files to be backed up before sending it to the backup server.
The exact amount of compression acheived will depend on the type of files to be compressed. For example, jpeg files are already a compressed file so very little can be done with them. On the other hand, text files can be compressed by 50% or more.
