| Support & Assistance: Uploading your site
Once the domain registration process is complete and web hosting set up, you are now ready to load your files onto your web site.
To do this we use a type of program known as an FTP program. File Transfer Protocol (FTP) sounds more complicated than it is. FTP programs work by sending files from your home computer to your web site. As soon as the files have been loaded, they will be visible on your site.
Before we start: Before you start you will need an FTP program. There are dozens of different types. Some are free, some not, and some web page editing programs like Microsoft Frontpage, have built in FTP programs. Our favourite is WS_FTP from Ipswitch software. There is a FREE version available here Download.com has dozens of FTP programs. Just type "FTP" in the search box.
Settings Most FTP programs will prompt you to create a new entry on starting for the first time. If not, select File -> New (or consult the program's help section).
Though the precise process varies greatly from program to program, all will ask you to enter the following information:
- Host Name: ftp.yourdomainname.ie
- UserID: your domain administrator login
- Password: your domain administrator password
If there is a space for "Remote file folder", enter "/var/www/html"
Logging On
Once the above details have been entered, it is simply a matter of hitting the "connect" button.
The File System If you have connected successfully, you will be in one of two directories on your web site (the remote directory): If you entered "Remote file folder" in the set up stage above, you should now be in the /web/ directory this is where all files & directories that are visible on your web site are stored.
If you did not enter the "Remote file folder" entry, then you should be in the following directory: "/home/yourusername". To load your files, you need to change your directory to "/var/www/html" this can be done by either double clicking on the "mainwebsite_html" link or by replacing "/home/yourusername" in the location bar with "/var/www/html/" and hitting return. This is what you will see if you log on without setting the "remote start directory":
Double click on the "mainwebsite_html" directory to access the location of your web files.
The Web Directory You will see that there are already some files in the /var/www/html directory. These are for the default page that can be seen at www.yourdomain.ie before you have uploaded your own web pages. Simply delete the pages and directories that you do not need. Note: directories must be empty before you can delete them.
Checking Your Work: Once you have uploaded your files, they should be immediately visible. If they are not, it is possible that they have been uploaded to the wrong directory.
